Lindy Hop wird auch als Großvater des Swings bezeichnet. Er entstand in den späten 20er Jahren in den Ballsälen des „schwarzen“ New Yorker Stadtteils Harlem, wie dem berühmten Savoy Ballroom und entwickelte sich später zu vielen anderen Tanzformen, wie z.B. Rock’n’Roll, Boogie Woogie und Jive. Er wurde zu Big Band Musik getanzt und und erhielt seine typischen Charaktereigenschaften durch sogenannte „Break-Aways“ und vor allem durch den Swing Out, bei dem die Partner umeinander rumwirbeln. Beim Break-Away wurde die enge Paartanzhaltung aufgebrochen und beide Partner konnten individuell Schritte improvisieren. Der Tanz kann – durch wilde Kicks und Bewegungen bereichert – wild und spontan sein, aber auch cool und elegant. Später auch als „Jitterbug“ bezeichnet, verbreitete er sich zwischen 1930 und 1950 rasend schnell über den amerikanischen Kontinent und vor allem durch die US-Soldaten und die Hollywoodfilme erlangte er weltweite Popularität. Lindy Hop wurde stark beeinflusst durch afroamerikanische Tänze, vor allem von Charleston, Jazz und Stepptanz. 1943 bezeichnete das Life Magazine den Lindy Hop als „Amerikas Nationalen Volkstanz“. Es gibt viele unterschiedliche Stile des Lindy Hop. Die bekanntesten sind Savoy Style und Hollywood Style Lindy Hop.

Considered the grand daddy of most swing dances, the Lindy Hop originated in Harlem ballrooms such as the famous Savoy in the late 1920’s and evolved later into many forms as Rock’n’Roll, Boogie Woogie, and Jive. It was danced to big band music and was characterized by “breakaways” in which partners in a couple separated and improvised steps individually and the Swing Out, where partners were swinging around each other, opening up at the end. The dance can be wild and spontaneous, with frenzied kicks and body movements, or it can be cool and sophisticated. Later called the “Jitterbug“, it exploded in popularity across the USA throughout 1930-1950 and has been brought into the world mostly through the American soldiers and the Hollywood movies. The Lindy Hop owes much to African American influence, particularly Charleston, Jazz and Tap steps. In 1943, Life Magazine characterized Lindy Hop as “America’s National Folk Dance”. There exist many different styles of Lindy Hop. The most well known are Savoy and Hollywood Style.

Boogie Woogie ist der Name für eine Musikrichtung und verschiedene Tanzstile. In den USA ist Boogie Woogie die Bezeichnung für Vernacular Solo-Jazzschritte. In Europa versteht man unter Boogie Woogie einen 6-Count Tanzstil, der eine Weiterentwicklung von Jitterbug, Lindy Hop und Rock’n’Roll der 50er Jahre ist, die die GIs mit nach Deutschland brachten. Boogie Woogie ist bekannt für seine eindrucksvolle und vielseitige Fußarbeit. Neben unzähligen Hobbytänzern gibt es auch hochkarätige internationale Turniertänzer. Boogie Woogie wird hauptsächlich zu Musik der späten 40er und 50er Jahre getanzt (z.B. Boogie Woogie, Rhythm’n’Blues, Rock’n’Roll, Rockabilly, Jive). Er erlaubt viel Freiraum für persönliches Styling und Improvisation und ist reich an typischen Figuren und Schritten, die in viele andere Tanzstile übernommen wurden. Andererseits wurden in den letzten Jahren auch viele Figuren aus anderen Swingtänzen in den Boogie Woogie integriert.

Boogie Woogie is the name for a music style and different dance styles. In the USA Boogie Woogie is used as a term for Vernacular Jazz Steps. In Europe Boogie Woogie is a 6-count dance style that is a progression of the Jitterbug, Lindy Hop, and Rock’n’Roll of the 50s which were brought to Germany after the war with the GIs. It is famous for its spectacular and fast footwork. There is a large number of social dancers, but also high-class international competition couples. Boogie Woogie is danced mainly to music of the late 40s and 50s (e.g. Boogie Woogie, Rhythm’n’Blues, Rock’n’Roll, Rockabilly, Jive). Boogie Woogie allows a lot of space for free styling and improvisation. It is rich in typical figures and steps and many other dances have “borrowed” steps from Boogie Woogie. On the other hand many moves of other swing styles have been incorporated in Boogie Woogie in recent years too.

Shag (Collegiate Shag) ist einer der drei Hauptformen der Swingtänze (Shag, Lindy Hop, Balboa). Man tanzte bereits Shag in ganz Amerika lange bevor Lindy Hop populär wurde. Er besteht aus vielen Hüpfern und Kicks und wurde meist in geschlossener Haltung getanzt, besitzt aber auch eine Vielzahl von offenen Elementen. Shag kann zu Musik in mittlerem und schnellerem Tempo getanzt werden. Verschiedene Stile waren in unterschiedlichen Regionen populär. Die verschiedenen Shagformen werden als Single, Double und Triple Rhythm Shag bezeichnet und sagen aus, wie viele Slows getanzt werden. Single Rhythm Shag war ein sehr dominanter Stil in der Swingära. Heutzutage ist der Double Rhythm Shag die gebräuchlichste Form. Basierend auf sechs Zählzeiten (wie Boogie Woogie) und einem einfachen Slow, Slow, Quick, Quick ist diese Form leicht zu erlernen. Shag war der heißeste Tanz der College-Studenten in den 30er Jahren, weshalb manche Formen auch als Collegiate Shag bezeichnet werden. Nicht zu verwechseln ist Shag mit Carolina Shag oder St. Louis Shag.

"Shag (Collegiate Shag) is one of the classic three major Swing Dance forms (Shag, Lindy Hop, Balboa). It even was spread all over America some years before Lindy Hop became popular. It consists of a lot of hops and kicks and is danced a lot in closed positions but also has open elements. It can be danced from medium to very fast music. Different styles were popular in different regions. The different forms of Shag are referred to as Single, Double, and Triple Rhythm Shag. The different names describe how many slows will be danced. Single Rhythm Shag has been a very dominate style in the Swing era. Nowadays the most common form of Shag is the Double Rhythm Shag. It’s based on 6 counts (like Boogie Woogie) and with a simple Slow, Slow, Quick, Quick this form of Shag is very easy to learn. Shag was the hottest dance among the college kids in the 30s, that’s why some styles were called “Collegiate Shag”. Shag is not to be mixed up with Carolina Shag or St. Louis Shag.

Balboa ist bekannt für seine geschmeidige, enge Fußarbeit, bereichert mit vielen Shuffleschritten, und seine enge "Brust-an-Brust"-Tanzhaltung. Balboatänzern war es angeblich nicht erlaubt, sich aus der geschlossenen Tanzhaltung zu lösen. Sie waren elegant gekleidete Tänzer, die nicht gerne schwitzen wollten. Balboa ist ideal für schnelle Musik. Man sagt, dass ein guter Balboatänzer auf jede Geschwindigkeit tanzen konnte. Der Balboagrundschritt basiert auf 8 Zählzeiten. Wahrscheinlich hat er seinen Ursprung im Foxtrot oder/und im Charleston. Infolge Platzmangel auf der Tanzfläche entwickelte sich daraus der Balboa. Der Pavilion Ballroom und der Rendezvous Ballroom waren die heißesten Ballsäle auf Balboa Island in Südkalifornien, wo Balboa in den 30er Jahren entstanden ist.

Balboa is known for its smooth, tight footwork with a lot of shuffling, and “chest to chest” close dancing position. It is said that Balboa dancers were not allowed to break-away from the closed position and that they were the ones who dressed up and didn’t want to sweat. The Balboa has an 8-count basic and is well suited for fast tempos, though it was said a good Balboa dancer could Balboa at any tempo. It is probably based on the Foxtrot and/or the Charleston and was born in the 1930’s in Southern California, on Balboa Peninsula, due to crowded dance floors. The Pavilion and the Rendezvous Ballroom were the hot places.

Durch Änderung der Musik von Swing zu Rhythm’n’Blues und Rock’n’Roll hat man in England den Lindy Hop vereinfacht, was man in der Umgangssprache "jiven" nannte. Mit einem einfachen Grundschritt basierend auf 4 Schlägen ist Rockabilly Jive leicht zugänglich und einfach zu lernen. Er sieht cool aus und macht eine Menge Spaß. Die Basis für die Dame ist ein Rock Step rückwärts und vorwärts. Für den Mann ist die Basis ein Side Tap, Side Tap. Jivetänzer scheinen viel zu hüpfen, aber wenn er gut getanzt wird, bleibt der Kopf auf einer Höhe während man hüpft, bounced und Wechselschritte tanzt. Weitverbreitet ist eine pumpende Führungshand. Jive wird zu mittlerer und schneller Musik getanzt. Er hat viele Anhänger in der Rockabilly- und Rock’n’Roll-Szene auf der ganzen Welt.

Following the change in music to more Rhythm’n’Blues and Rock’n’Roll Lindy Hop became more simplified in the U.K. and was referred to as "jiving". With a very easy basic step Rockabilly Jive is very accessible and easy to learn. It looks cool and fun. The basic for the lady is just a rock back and rock forward, while the man does a side tap, side tap. Jive appears to be hopping, but when danced well, as you hop and bounce and triple-step you keep the head level. Commonly the lead hand is pumping. It is danced to medium and fast music. It has a large followership in the Rockabilly and Rock’n’Roll scene all over the world.

Charleston ist ein witziger, extravaganter und energiegeladener Tanz aus den 20er Jahren und kann sowohl mit als auch ohne Partner getanzt werden. Ungeachtet des „schwarzen“ Hintergrunds, wird Charleston meist mit weißen „Flappers“ und dem „Speak Easy“ assoziiert. Aus diesem Tanz entwickelte Charlestonelemente werden auch viel im Lindy Hop eingebaut.

Charleston is a fun, flamboyant and very energetic dance from around the 1920s that can be danced with or without a partner. Despite its black history, Charleston is most frequently associated with white flappers and the speakeasy. 20s Charleston steps are often incorporated into Lindy Hop.

Vernacular ist ein Begriff für die einheimischen Tanzformen einer Gesellschaft, die durch einheimische Traditonen, gemeinsamen sozialen Austausch und allgemein bekannte Kultur entstanden sind. Amerikanischer Vernacular Jazz (auch Authentic Jazz genannt) bezieht seinen Ursprung in den Gebräuchen der frühen afrikanischen Gesellschaften, die sich dann zu den afro-amerikanischen Tanzformen entwickelt hatten. Beispiele sind: Cakewalk, Charleston, Tap, Swing, Mambo, Blues, Break Dance, Salsa und Hip Hop. Die mit bekanntesten Jazzschritte aus dem Vernacular Jazz sind Boogie Back, Boogie Forward, Shorty George, Suzy Q, Fall of the Log und Apple Jacks.

Vernacular refers to indigenous dance forms created within a community and derived from native traditions, common social exchanges and a familiar culture. American Vernacular Jazz dance (also called Authentic Jazz) traces its origins to the rites of early African communities. These rites continue to evolve through social traditions danced primarily within African-American communities. Examples include Cakewalk, Charleston, Tap, Swing, Mambo, Blues, Break Dance, Salsa and Hip Hop.

Der Shim Sham war ursprünglich eine Stepptanzchoreographie, die von Leonard Reed (1907-2004) und Willie Bryant 1928 kreiert wurde. Die Choreographie war für ein Showfinale bestimmt und musste daher simpel genug sein, um von allen Künstlern schnell erlernt werden zu können. Von da an nahm der Siegeszug des Shim Sham seinen Lauf und die Routine wurde eine der bekanntesten und meist verbreiteten Tanzroutinen aller Zeiten. Ursprünglich als Goofus bezeichnet, wurde sie später nach dem Shim Sham Club in Harlem benannt. Verschiedenste Stepp- und Nicht-Stepp-Versionen sind auch heute noch ein fester Bestandteil großer Shows. Der Shim Sham ist die Nationalhymne der Stepptänzer. Leonard Reed kreierte später auch den Shim Sham „Freeze Chorus“, den „Shim Sham 2“ und „The Revenge of the Shim Sham“. Frankie Manning verbreitete eine nicht gesteppte Version in der Swinggemeinschaft.

Sein Ursprung lässt sich zurückführen auf einen Südstaatenclub namens „The Big Apple“. Der Big Apple ähnelte dem Square Dance, benutzte aber die populären Schritte der Zeit wie Charleston, Suzie Q, Shag, Truckin’, Spank Yo’ Horsey, Piggy Back, Organ Grinder’s Swing und Scratchin’ Fleas. Im Frühjahr 1937 war der Big Apple DER Modetanz im ganzen Land. Für Aufführungen wurde i.d.R. eine Choreographie verwendet. Eine der von Frankie Manning choreograpierten Big Apple Routinen ist in dem Kurzfilm „Jitterin’ Jitterbugs“ zu sehen und erfreut sich großer Beliebtheit. Big Apple was a popular group dance that was primarily done in a circular format and where the steps were called out. Its origins can be traced back to a Southern club called “The Big Apple”. The Big Apple was similar to a Square Dance, but used the popular steps of the time, like Charleston, Suzie Q, Shag, Truckin’, Spank Yo’ Horsey, Piggy Back, Organ Grinder’s Swing and Scratchin’ Fleas. In the spring of 1937 the Big Apple was THE fashionable dance in the whole country. For performances usually routines were used. One version choreographed by Frankie Manning can be seen in “Jitterin’ Jitterbugs” and enjoys great popularity. In the last years the free called version became increasingly popular again, too.

Tranky Doo ist ein Gruppentanz, der an den Schritt einer Tänzerin aus den 40er Jahren gleichen Namens angelehnt ist. Die beiden bekanntesten Versionen sind die von Frankie Manning und Pepsi Bethel, Al Minns und Leon James. Ursprünglich getanzt zu „Tuxedo Junction“ von Erskine Hawkins, kann er zu jedem Lied getanzt werden, das im klassischen Swing-Chorus-Muster (AABA) gespielt wird. Zusammen mit dem Shim Sham und dem Big Apple war der Tranky Doo eine der Standardroutinen, die im Savoy Ballroom in den 40er Jahren getanzt wurden.

The Tranky Doo is a jazz line dance composed from a female dancers’ steps from the 1940s named Tranky Doo! The two most common versions are the routines by Frankie Manning and by Pepsi Bethel, Al Minns and Leon James. Originally done to “Tuxedo Junction” by Erskine Hawkins it can be danced to any swing song with classic 32-bar AABA structure. Along with the Shim Sham and the Big Apple, the Tranky Doo was a staple of the Savoy Ballroom in the 1940s.

Der Stroll war ein beliebter Gruppentanz in den 50er Jahren. Erstmals wurde er zu „C.C. Rider“ von Chuck Willis beim American Bandstand aufgeführt. Die Lieder, auf die man Strolls tanzt, sind alle im Blues Chorus geschrieben. Eine Reihe Jungs und eine Reihe Mädels stellen sich gegenüber auf und bewegen sich auf dem Platz zur Musik. Jedes Paar gibt dann zwischen den Reihen eine einstudierte Tanzfolge zum Besten.

The Stroll was a popular line dance in the 1950s. It was first performed to “C.C. Rider” by Chuck Willis on American Bandstand. The songs used for strolls are written in a slow Blues Chorus pattern. In the dance, two lines of dancers, men on one side and women on the other, face each other, moving in place to the music. Each paired couple then steps out and does a more elaborate dance up and down between the rows of dancers.

Jitterbug Stroll ist ein Gruppen-/Reihentanz, der auf frühen Jazzschritten aus der Swingära basiert. Er wurde von Ryan Francois für den Tanzclub „Jitterbugs“ auf das Lied „Woodchoppers Ball“ von Woody Hermann choreographiert. Der Jitterbug Stroll kann aber zu jeder Musik getanzt werden, die im Blues-Schema (12-taktiges Schema) geschrieben ist. Steven Mitchell hat später hierfür das Lied "Jitterbug Stroll", in dem er die Figuren ansagt, geschrieben und aufgenommen.

Jitterbug Stroll is a line dance based on early jazz steps from the swing era. It was created by Ryan Francois for the dance club “Jitterbugs” in London. Ryan used the tune “Woodchoppers Ball” by Woody Hermann, but the Jitterbug Stroll can be danced to any song written in a Blues Chorus format (12 bars per chorus).
